With Mercury and the Sun in the sign of Cancer now and with the Venus going in at the end of August 17th we are getting the summer swing of the planets through this watery sign. If you are Cancer moon or Cancer rising in the Vedic system or have Cancer rising in the D9 chart or even if your Sun is in Cancer (born July 17-August 16th), you may relate to the material presented below but we all have some Cancer in our chart that impacts us in some way.
Cancer rising has problem with the earth element and the material world and has to learn how to save money and work in the world. Depending on other factors in the chart, Cancer has problems manifesting in the material world. This can be off-set by a strong balance of well-placed planets in Capricorn, Taurus and Virgo can be helpful if in the chart to offset this latent flaw. A well-placed Venus or Saturn can offset this imbalances particularly if they are well-aspected or are in Taurus or Capricorn. Cancers have to actively focus on taking those success seminars and getting out in the material world when they would rather just meditate and bathe in the wonders of the spiritual world.
If the moon is afflicted by malefics like Rahu, Ketu, Mars or Saturn or if the Moon is poorly placed in the 6th, 8th or 12th houses or in the troubled signs like Scorpio, Capricorn, Aquarius or Gemini than the the darker side of this sign can come out particularly is it that can lead to moodiness, being sarcastic, impolite, critical, self-deprecation, mocking and ridicule. Cancer have to avoid getting to caught up in their head, being too rigid and getting too stuck with attitude.
If you have planets in Cancer in your chart or even in the D9 / Navamsha chart, they reveal what can be our best friend, and what can provide care or heal us. So if Venus is in Cancer in D1 or D9 then women will be a source of care and healing for you where as if Mars in Cancer in D1 or D9 it mean that your or siblings are a source of healing and care or if Jupiter is in Cancer than your Guru or priest or a coach would be a source of care
The rising sign may not be as soft and gentle as the stereotype might envision as the constellation of Ashlesha (Cancer 16.20-30.00) can have a poisoned tongue and be prone to gossip and even the auspicious Pushya Nakshatra section (Cancer 3.20-16.40) can be prone to melancholy and depression and criticism with Saturn being the ruler.
Cancers have problems with being too dependent or clingy, hoarding, hypersensitivity, moody, and picking dysfunctional friends and partners. They need to get more grounded so doing gardening, building and carpentry and home-fix-it projects is helpful. Increasing the fire element through active and fiery aerobic exercise is important to get the solar plexus enlivened and get the fire moving and avoiding overeating and obsession with food and cooking and cleaning and this can help re-balance its nurturing nature.
Cancer rising may have blind spots to the following: Blind to how self-centered they can be of all the signs.
- Their emotional needs are more important than anyone.
- Blind to domestic smothering that can happen.
- Blind to boundaries—what to let in and what not to let in.
- Blind to passive aggressiveness which may protect their own inner turmoil.
- Clinging to family and security issues too much.
- Blind to learning possessiveness—Cancers would rather lose a claw than let go of possessions. Learning not to hoard stuff, give to Goodwill regularly and cleaning out clutter is very key.

PART 2: Cancer and the Planets
Each rising sign has a set of planets that is problematic or supportive for its nature:
- Venus and Mercury cause problems
- Jupiter and the Moon are auspicious
- Mars brings good fortune
- Saturn and the Sun have maraka or illness inflicting impacts
Taurus is badhaka for having a hidden psychological flaw as it rules the 11th house and Venus is the badhaka lord. Badhaka planets for Cancer like Venus may create problems with hearing, friendship, income and working in groups and marriage if Venus or Taurus is poorly placed and afflicted by more one or more malefics like Mars, Rahu, Ketu or Saturn.
Cancers have an usual relationship with the planet Venus. In Jamini astrology, Venus/Moon conjunctions form a Raj Yoga for wealth particularly if connected to the 2nd, 4th, 9th or 11th houses. Venus may cause Cancer’s to be too attached to comfort of the home or vulnerable to problems in social groups where they can easily have problems getting along even if everything seems “nicey-nicey” at first. Venus may pull Cancer down if it gets too caught up in the energy of Taurus and its quest for more stuff and material prosperity and comfort when it really needs to focus more on spiritual advancement centered on the 9th house and Jupiter.
One of the keys to this sign is regular spiritual practice to calm the mind and overcome overcome emotional insecurities and strengthening the fifth house which is the place of debilitation for them.
Mars is the best planet for Cancer rising as it is Yoga Karaka planet owing 5th and 10th. This gives Cancers great energy to fight for their careers but not without stressful impact of a natural malefic. In relationship, they may marry for status or marry a career partner but many of them may attract powerful and aggressive partners that overwhelm their emotional nature. Hence the romance life of the 5th house connected Scorpio can lead to deep brooding relationships that are very complicated and complex.
Jupiter is a good planet for Cancer rising owing the 9th and 6th houses and supports the conservative, morals and principled outlook of Cancers. They will naturally work hard for spiritual and religious causes and organizations. If Jupiter is in the 1st house or aspects it from Pisces or Scorpio, they may be too attached to children or may have problems with weight gain and be too attached and unable to let go.
Cancer have a very difficult time in relationship with Saturn owning the 7th and 8th houses. They may be attracted to marrying a partner from a foreign country or getting into complicated and more serious and difficult business relationship. They key is learning trust. Saturn can bring up health issues that come out of these difficult relationships if the emotional turmoil is not handled. Saturn requires that relationships be handled with discipline and detachment but this is not nearly as much fun if Venus is not present in the 7th to offset some of the dryness and routine energy that can overtake the relationship and creating a new spark will be necessary.
